I got some excellent results for flames by just creating a texture with
the procedural textures in Lightwave. I used the underwater texture on the
color channel from black to bright yellow and chose additive. Then I used
a fractal noise transparency map to make it look more flame-like.
I also put an upward velocity on the transparency map.
This yielded very realistic fire, and I think it could be adapted for
explosions as well if you don't have that CD or a special effects studio
to tape the real thing.
